Report by Andrea Lacertosa – GREEN WORLD FOR KIDS | 25 November 2025
On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Medialthea Association renews its broader commitment to supporting initiatives that protect and empower girls, including the work carried out by Green World for Kids in the Maasai community.
In 2025, Green World for Kids launched a structured initiative to combat female genital mutilation (FGM) within the Maasai community—an entrenched and often hidden practice that remains one of the most severe forms of gender-based violence.
Thanks to the association’s work on the ground, a first official meeting was held at the Hilton Hotel in Nairobi with Kenyan political and institutional representatives—a crucial step to introduce such a sensitive topic within a complex cultural context. In parallel, the project involved tribal leaders, county administrators and local authorities, laying the foundations for broad community consensus—an essential prerequisite for effective prevention.
# Stop Female Genital Mutilation
A pathway that begins with families and schools
Only after this initial institutional engagement was it possible to start meeting with families, teachers and students to raise awareness about the health and psychological risks linked to FGM and to strengthen the protection of girls most at risk.
The team also carried out field visits in the villages during school holidays—periods when the likelihood of FGM increases—monitoring the situation household by household.
There is a concrete sense of urgency: thirteen students from Naibala Academy have already reached the most vulnerable age range. Protecting them means working closely with the community to ensure that none of them undergoes mutilation.
A project set to expand in 2026
New institutional meetings are already planned for January 2026 in Nairobi, aimed at consolidating political support and coordinating a prevention model that can be replicated across other Maasai areas.
Naibala Academy, a long-standing partner of Green World for Kids, is today the educational hub from which this process of change is growing.
Medialthea’s commitment
Medialthea supports this path of protection and prevention, recognising its human and social value.
“This important step forward on such a sensitive issue is also a call for awareness: progress like this should inspire and encourage similar initiatives in other vulnerable and underserved areas, where girls and young women still face serious risks. Medialthea will continue to follow and promote efforts that strengthen safety, dignity and long-term opportunities for every child.“
