The Cerebral Function Monitor (CFM) donated with the support of Medialthea has successfully completed testing and is now ready for clinical use at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Policlinico Umberto I in Rome and is now ready for clinical use.
The milestone marks the final step of the project supported by Medialthea together with La Magia di un Sorriso ONLUS, bringing advanced neurological monitoring directly into the Unit.
A vital tool for neonatal care
The CFM is used to assess neurological function in newborns affected by perinatal hypoxic-ischemic events and provides essential information for the timely initiation of controlled therapeutic hypothermia, currently the only treatment able to prevent permanent neurological damage.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit treats approximately 30 newborns with perinatal asphyxia every year. Its two previous CFM devices had been declared out of service after years of intensive use, forcing doctors to borrow equipment from other intensive care units when needed.
Having a dedicated CFM available within the Unit now helps ensure continuity and timely access to treatment for newborns requiring immediate care.
From Medialthea’s support to clinical use
Medialthea contributed €25,000 to the project promoted by La Magia di un Sorriso ONLUS, which has supported the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Policlinico Umberto I for more than ten years.
With the testing and commissioning process now completed, the equipment is finally ready to become part of the Unit’s daily clinical activity, turning Medialthea’s support into a concrete resource for doctors, newborns and their families.
